A Group of 200 women killed Akku Yadav in a district court room brutally which led to escape of all police men and court officials nearby. Few witnesses claimed the women have marched from Kasturba Nagar carrying knives, stones, chilli powder to kill 32-year-old AKKU YADAV. This incident took place on 13th august 2004 in Maharashtra after they came to know about the approval for his bail.
Akku Yadav was born in Nagpur in 1972. He became a gangster by doing thefts, crimes and frightening everyone in Kasturba Nagar. He used to kill and rape women very brutally and didn’t even spare children and pregnant women. After many crimes one women Narayane gave a complaint on him by collecting signatures from locals and submitted to Deputy Commissioner directly.
DC even provided safe house for that night and promised her search warrant against him. She gave complaint on him due to his repeated action on her, about throwing acid & raping her. He used to visit her house because her brother-in-law stood against him in a case.
He was arrested on 6th august after DC initiated search warrant. Akku even tried to escape after he was caught through his supporters under police men but failed – when he came for his first hearing in court.
Seeing their efforts wasted after they came to know he would get bail after court hearing. This made them ferocious about the hearing and intended to take action against him all by themselves. Few men along with all the women took knives, rocks and chilli powder and reached court room where they killed him brutally. He was stabbed nearly 70 times along with cutting his ears and penis. After the death 5 women were arrested within minutes however, they were released after protests in city.
There was a theory that a powerful rivalry gang used the women against Akku so that it was believed as women’s rebel but was never proved. After the incident, the court did find out 18 accused but the prosecution failed because there was no exact and crucial information in the initial investigation. The autopsy report of Akku showed, he took alcohol which was not a treatment of prisoner and led to action against the police individuals.
The court has always granted him bail whenever the Kasturba residents claim he abused them. He used to frighten 300 Local families regularly and even police never used to take strict action against him. He even murdered at least 3 neighbors and threw their dead bodies on railway tracks.
All these was captured into a documentary series “Indian Predator Murder in A Courtroom” in Netflix after the close and detail investigation by director- Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni, Gender researcher – Cynthia Stephen, Head of research – Nidhi Salian along with fact finding team.
Director said making the documentary was challenging due to multiple complex events of Akku and his family did not accept to speak. Nidhi Salian said the case has been overshadowed by the attack on him of 200 women rather than his previous mischief acts.
Even the people of Kasturba Nagar had faced several problems due to loss of jobs and permission to work at their organization. This led to financial and emotional loss in lives thereafter. The media did not cover the news effectively as they were low in caste which caused spreading negative image about the Kasturba Nagar.
