Ms Amanda Gill, a waitress in Britain was a keen traveller, and travelled to India, where she converted to Hinduism. She has spent a lot of time travelling to temples around the world.
She was 41 and suffered mental issues and Type 1 diabetes. She suspected epilepsy but wasn’t diagnosed.
She was travelling to temples in Mexico in December 2017 where she fell ill. A friend she was travelling with had messaged her family saying Ms Gill could not retain water and was vomiting, and had been taken to hospital, where she later died. They said she died because of a heart attack. The hospital sent Ms Gill’s family an outstanding bill of $3000 for her medical expenses.
Her body was sent to UK Foreign Office from Mexico. When their family received her body, it was sent for post mortem. Pathologis Dr. Lisa Barker failed to find the cause of death but was shocked to see that all her organs were missing except intestine. Gill’s family was told about this incident. They wanted to know the reality and went back to UK Foreign Office to Assistant Deputy Coroner Oliver Longstaff. The officer assured them that her organs would be returned.
When her sister Katie Miler Gill took the matter in her hand she found out, in the clinical notes it said she had ketoacidosis as a result of gastroenteritis.
She said, there was no record of her blood sugar level – which should have been checked – or if she had been treated with insulin.
The reason behind death was not satisfactory and not properly justified by the hospital staff. What was more concerning, when they were asked about missing organs, they denied the allegations. They said after her death, they sealed her body and sent it to the UK embassy. When UK officials reverted back to inquire about her, Mexico officials and hospital staff didn’t explain much.
Due to cross border crime, UK officials didn’t have much scope of investigation. The most probable conclusion which they all came was, Amanda’s organs were illegally trafficked. This is not clear whether hospital staff was a part of it or not. A spokesperson from the Mexican Embassy in the UK said he didn’t even know about the case.
Not only her death but her missing organs both became a terrific mystery.
